Breadfruit leaves. The Marinitawa Farming Cluster in Ba Province in the Fiji highlands was able to establish a nursery for breadfruit saplings with the help of IFAD's Pacific Islands Rural and Agriculture Stimulus Facility (PIRAS) and its implementing partner Rise Beyond the Reef. Through PIRAS, the 2,000 breadfruit seedlings will be distributed to other cluster farms in Yakete and Navosa Provinces. Breadfruit has great potential to address hunger and malnutrition across the Pacific Islands Region, which is why farmers are encouraged to integrate this superfood as an agroforestry system to increase food diversity and resilience for food security. The PIRAS project aims to assist farmers with post-harvest handling, food processing, and access to the market to accelerate their recovery from the COVID-19 crisis. |
