Title: HONDURAS - Puentes/Rural4YoungPeople Project - July 2022
Description: Media tour led by US Ambassador before the UN agencies based in Rome Cindy McCain visits Miska School in La Esperanza, Intibuca Department, Honduras. The school is one of the initiatives funded through IFAD's grant "Puentes/Rural4Young People"
On 19 Nov. 2021, “MISKA” cooking and entrepreneurship school opened its doors . The school will benefit a total of 560 young Hondurans in three years, providing them with technical training in gastronomy with a focus on healthy eating, revalorization of rural areas, job creation and entrepreneurship.
Miska, an indigenous word that means “early sowing”, is a gastronomic training initiative inspired by the 'Manqa' model. Manqa schools have trained, over the last 7 years, more than 5,550 young chefs in Bolivia, Colombia and Guatemala. They have been recognized as one of the 50 best small social enterprises in the “Good Food for All” contest, held in conjunction with the United Nations Food Systems Summit.
Teaching in Miska is mainly practical and lasts five and a half months. It is not limited to the technical aspect of cooking and handling food, but it develops youth’s skills for customer service and management of their own businesses.
