Title: Fiji - Pacific Islands Rural and Agriculture Stimulus Facility (PIRAS) - July 2022
Description: Eroni Qolikitoga is a married farmer from the community of Navai, district of Naboubuco, in the province of Naitasiri. He has been farming for more than 8 years and relies on the soil to support his family. As an off-season farmer that supplies fresh vegetables to the market, during the lockdown period in Fiji Eroni Qolikitoga couldn’t send his vegetables – carrots, dhania, radish, tomatoes, purple cabbage, and potatoes to the market due to a drop in demand and restriction of movement.
Many Fijians lost their jobs and the prices for fresh food along with other basic food items increased which was a challenge for Eroni Qolikitoga to supply his vegetables to the nearest market. The Pacific Islands Rural and Agriculture Stimulus Facility project (PIRAS) aimed at helping farmers in Fiji recover from the impact of the COVID pandemic. The PIRAS project through Partners in Community Development Fiji – PCDF assisted Eroni Qolikitoga with vegetable seeds that will help him continue with the supply of his off-season vegetable to the local market.
Climate change is affecting small-scale off-season vegetable farmers, like Eroni
“Climate Change has delayed activities on the farm’’ says Eroni. The PIRAS project through Partners in Community Development Fiji conducted technical training on increasing soil health and seed extraction to improve food and nutritional security. Through the project, Eroni was provided with vegetable seeds like long bean, capsicum, watermelon, cucumber, and others to provide his family with nutritional food and financial support by selling his produce to the local market to accelerate recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.
