The agricultural cooperative ACOPAGRO works with organic and special quality cocoa beans from planting, through maintenance, harvesting and processing, to the export stage, where its main buyers are countries such as Italy, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and the United States. It is important for them to increase the number of producers associated with the cooperative, but even more important is that their current members grow and improve their productivity, basing their work on solidarity, trust and sustainable development. Peru is one of the countries with the greatest variety of cocoa, with 60% of such diversity. In 2019, Peruvian cocoa exports reached USD 294 million; however, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), border closures as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic hindered Peruvian cocoa exports, which dropped by 20.5% up to April 2020 alone. The AGRIdigitalization project is an IFAD initiative aimed at strengthening farmers’ organizations. It had a business intervention model which included training services, webpage updating, documents and videos translation, and positioning of products on digital platforms outside of traditional commerce. The purpose was to develop and strengthen a support model for organizations to access new markets through e-commerce. |
