Title: Argentina - Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA) – November 2022
Description: Meters away from where she was born and raised, in Ojo de Agua, in the province of Neuquén, Argentina, 55-year-old goat producer Ángela Fernández sees how the China Muerta stream, which used to have water in winter and summer during her childhood, now remains completely dry in all the seasons. “With no pasture or water nearby, the animals have to walk very far to feed themselves. As a result, they end up getting thinner than they should, and afterwards we can’t sell them,” she laments.

To mitigate the impact of these phenomena associated with climate change, the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA), developed a specific assistance project for 10 families in this area. It offered them investments to carry out specific improvements in each producer’s fields (in the case of Ángela, a shed was built for the goats) and also other more general improvements, such as the renovation of water wells to ensure access to water. The program also provided producers with technical assistance to better organize their logistics and establish better contacts with butchers and other potential buyers.

The aim of the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA), is to help small goat farmers in Argentina increase, enhance and market their production of meat, dairy products and fibre, especially mohair and cashmere.

The programme is expected to benefit a total of 8,000 families across the provinces of Chaco, Formosa, Mendoza, Neuquén and Santiago del Estero, home to about some 60 per cent of the country's goat herds.
