Title: Argentina - Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA) – November 2022
Description: Roberto Jara is 62 years old, a rural producer and works in his rural post, called “La Horqueta”, which is located about 12 kilometers southeast of Santo Tomás, a village of just over 300 inhabitants in the department of Collón Curá, in the province of Neuquén, Argentina. There he spends most of his time in solitude, enduring a harsh and permanently windy environment—wind gusts can exceed 100 kilometers per hour—and concentrating on raising Angora goats. “They are the best adapted to this climate and terrain,” he says.

With the support of the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA), Roberto was able to improve his production conditions. The investment included a wood and sheet metal shed in “La Horqueta”, but also other community benefits such as access to tools: an electronic scale, a grading table, shearing scissors and a sharpener. Access to credit instruments—pre-financing to be able to sell mohair, the fiber produced from goat hair, and a revolving fund for the purchase of feed and fodder—is another item provided by PRODECCA to this community.

The aim of the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA), is to help small goat farmers in Argentina increase, enhance and market their production of meat, dairy products and fibre, especially mohair and cashmere.

The programme is expected to benefit a total of 8,000 families across the provinces of Chaco, Formosa, Mendoza, Neuquén and Santiago del Estero, home to about some 60 per cent of the country's goat herds.
