Title: | Argentina - Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA) – November 2022 |
Description: |
In addition to selling the goats he raises in his rural post located in the department of Collón Curá, in the province of Neuquén, the 62-year-old producer, Roberto Jara also sells the hair of these animals for the production of mohair, a very resistant and highly valued fiber in the textile market which, thanks to its properties, is considered a luxurious material: its soft texture is complemented by the qualities of being durable, elastic and wrinkle-resistant. Moreover, it is warm in winter and cool in summer due to its good insulating and moisture absorption properties. Support from the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA) enabled Roberto Jara and seven other producer families in the area to enter the mohair market by implementing a pre-financing system to cover the costs of selling to a producers’ cooperative in the nearby town of Zapala. In addition, they all received investments in their farms to improve infrastructure and other community benefits. The aim of the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA), is to help small goat farmers in Argentina increase, enhance and market their production of meat, dairy products and fibre, especially mohair and cashmere. The programme is expected to benefit a total of 8,000 families across the provinces of Chaco, Formosa, Mendoza, Neuquén and Santiago del Estero, home to about some 60 per cent of the country's goat herds. |
