Title: Argentina - Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA) – November 2022
Description: To improve his work as a goat breeder, 62-year-old producer Roberto Jara has a shed in his rural post in the department of Collón Curá, province of Neuquén, which he was able to roof and expand thanks to the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA), a national government initiative financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). In the area of Santo Tomás, the programme benefited eight families with infrastructure contributions for each of the producers, lines of financing and tools for community use.

In this enclosed space Beto, as everyone knows him, concentrates most of his goat activity: it is where he keeps the younger goats, where the older ones rest when they are not outside grazing and also where he shears them. But it is also a security measure: a closed and roofed shed is important in this type of terrain because it allows producers to minimize the risk posed by predators in the area, such as foxes and pumas, which are numerous and can hunt multiple animals in a single attack, even at night.

The aim of the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA), is to help small goat farmers in Argentina increase, enhance and market their production of meat, dairy products and fibre, especially mohair and cashmere.

The programme is expected to benefit a total of 8,000 families across the provinces of Chaco, Formosa, Mendoza, Neuquén and Santiago del Estero, home to about some 60 per cent of the country's goat herds.
