Title: Argentina - Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA) – November 2022
Description: After 42 years working in the same field in the Neuquén department of Collón Curá, Roberto Jara, aged 62, fully recognizes the effects of climate change in the area, where lack of water is a problem for forage growth in already problematic soils. Rough gravel is abundant among the shrub steppe and land for forage growth is scarce. “If I could ask nature for anything, it would be a little more rain,” he says.

For this reason, neither Roberto nor the rest of the producers in this region have enough with the vegetation that nature offers them, and they depend on the supply of fodder bales to be able to ensure food for their animals. The Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA) enabled the implementation of a revolving fodder fund for the area that is intended to help mitigate this problem, among other initiatives for eight families aimed at offering community benefits as well as improvements to their farm facilities.

The aim of the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA), is to help small goat farmers in Argentina increase, enhance and market their production of meat, dairy products and fibre, especially mohair and cashmere.

The programme is expected to benefit a total of 8,000 families across the provinces of Chaco, Formosa, Mendoza, Neuquén and Santiago del Estero, home to about some 60 per cent of the country's goat herds.
