Every December, and until the arrival of autumn, 57-year-old Ana Cerda, a rural producer from the Portezuelo area (Neuquén), moves with all her animals from her field to another one in the mountain range area. This practice is known as transhumance and is very common among local producers: to optimize breeding of their animals, many look for an area with better access to water and pastures during the southern summer season, when rainfall is scarce. However, the effects of climate change have rendered this strategy obsolete: it is no longer enough to relocate to ensure the sustainability of their natural resources. “We used to have rain in autumn, snow in winter and with the arrival of spring everything changed. That way, the fields and animals were kept perfectly. Now everything has changed,” laments Ana. It is within this framework that solutions such as those offered by the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA) make sense. Ana and eight producer families in the area benefited from investments to improve water supply and the planting of shrub plots with native flora, which provide both forage and firewood (another scarce resource in the area) from a drip irrigation system. The aim of the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA), is to help small goat farmers in Argentina increase, enhance and market their production of meat, dairy products and fibre, especially mohair and cashmere. The programme is expected to benefit a total of 8,000 families across the provinces of Chaco, Formosa, Mendoza, Neuquén and Santiago del Estero, home to about some 60 per cent of the country's goat herds. |
