Title: Argentina - Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA) – November 2022
Description: Ana Cerda is a 57-year-old rural producer in the Portezuelo area, in the province of Neuquén, near the oil town of Cutral Co. Although she is married and has five children and three grandchildren, she works there alone, raising goats and other animals on a field that used to belong to her parents. “I am the continuation of their work,” she says.

In that place her father once managed some 1,300 goats, but due to climate change Ana is now limited to no more than 200: the decrease in rainfall and snowfall has changed the configuration of the terrain, and now there is not enough pasture available to keep more animals. This is a common problem for all producers in this region, which is the reason why the Argentine government implemented the Goat Value Chain Development Program (PRODECCA), an initiative financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). In this particular area, the program covers nine families that benefit from community investments to improve communications and access to fodder and firewood, as well as works on their land to add sheds, enclosures, and access to water.

The aim of the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA), is to help small goat farmers in Argentina increase, enhance and market their production of meat, dairy products and fibre, especially mohair and cashmere.

The programme is expected to benefit a total of 8,000 families across the provinces of Chaco, Formosa, Mendoza, Neuquén and Santiago del Estero, home to about some 60 per cent of the country's goat herds.
