Title: Argentina - Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA) – November 2022
Description: In the Portezuelo region, province of Neuquén, dry and very windy conditions—with regular gusts of 100 kilometers per hour—are a daily problem for rural producers. For this reason, building sheds for shelter has become essential for those who raise goats. “Now there is more wind than ever,” says Ana Cerda, aged 57, who knows the area well because she was born and raised there. “On top of this, rains are no longer like they used to be: now all the water falls at once and the fields get destroyed. And all this causes the cattle to get thinner.”

Ana manages a field that used to belong to her father and whatever she produces she uses for both personal consumption and selling purposes, generally targeting retail buyers. Support from the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA) enabled her and eight other families in the area to improve their production conditions with investment in sheds, enclosures, and improved water supply systems on their land.

The aim of the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA), is to help small goat farmers in Argentina increase, enhance and market their production of meat, dairy products and fibre, especially mohair and cashmere.

The programme is expected to benefit a total of 8,000 families across the provinces of Chaco, Formosa, Mendoza, Neuquén and Santiago del Estero, home to about some 60 per cent of the country's goat herds.
