Title: Argentina - Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA) – November 2022
Description: Like the rest of producers in the region of Paraje Aguada Las Cortaderas, drought and lack of firewood are the main problems that 42-year-old Gustavo Lizama, a producer from Neuquén, has to face on a daily basis. With the advance of technology, he was able to use solar energy to improve the conditions of his nearby field. But the situation is still far from ideal, and the effects of climate change are increasingly visible and damaging.

“Before, the climate was more balanced: now it is colder in winter and hotter in summer,” says the producer. “These changes require us to prepare ourselves with more infrastructure, and we also have to devote more time to the tasks, because we don’t know what the weather is going to be like, and that complicates decision making,” he says.

Support from the Goat Value Chain Development Program (PRODECCA) enabled Gustavo Lizama and other producers in the area to access improvements to their land, such as shrub plots with drip irrigation for native flora, which have a dual purpose: to provide forage for the animals and firewood.

The aim of the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA), is to help small goat farmers in Argentina increase, enhance and market their production of meat, dairy products and fibre, especially mohair and cashmere.

The programme is expected to benefit a total of 8,000 families across the provinces of Chaco, Formosa, Mendoza, Neuquén and Santiago del Estero, home to about some 60 per cent of the country's goat herds.
