Title: Indonesia – The Development of Integrated Farming Systems in Upland Areas (UPLAND) – November 2022
Description: Tatang Somantri is a 49-year-old father of two daughters who lives in Subang Regency, West Java province. He started out as a farmer of rice paddies, but, in the last five years, has started planting mangosteens. He decided to plant mangosteens as they have a higher potential for income generation.

However, in order to sell mangosteens overseas, the fruit has to be bigger than what he normally harvests. Despite his struggle, thanks to the support of his family, Tatang has never thought about giving up.

Tatang and other farmers have received support through the UPLAND project. He has been supplied with fertiliser which he uses on the mangosteens every three months so that the fruit can grow bigger; he says the mangosteens are harvested once a year.

Currently, Tatang is assigned an area of around 280 square metres to grow his mangosteen trees. However, he dreams of having a more space and land to be able to plant more mangosteens.

The aim of the Development of Integrated Farming Systems in Upland Areas (UPLAND) project is to reduce poverty and enhance food security in upland areas through remunerative, sustainable and resilient livelihoods. The target group of the project is smallholder men and women farmers, with a focus on youth
