Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - May 2022
Description: Pokiza Kholova (foreground), is the Head of one of the two poultry production women’s income-generating groups (WIGG) that the CASP established in Shahrinav Village. She is joined by Zulaikho Nabotova, Leader of the other WIGG for poultry production and group members Zulfiya Khushvakhtova, Zarnigor Yatimova, Zulfizar Nuriddinova and Firuza Sohibnazarova. The project provided 160 turkeys and 2 incubators to help 16 women from low-income families establish the two WIGGs for poultry production. During its first year of activity, the group produced 1,350 chicks, 100 ducklings and 1,050 turkey chicks, which have provided additional income for the needy households.

“We are aware that our poultry products are very nutritious. Before, we bought some chicken and eggs at the market when we could. Now, we eat the meat and eggs. And we have helped some of our neighbours start poultry production to improve their household nutrition and income, too.”

Most of the women had always had free range poultry around their homesteads. The incubators serve as a focal point for creating a cohesive community of women managing a collective activity for the specific purpose of generating income. Although they do still use turkey hens to hatch eggs during the cold winter months when electrical outages could leave the incubators without power, the women have learned to collect eggs – marked with different colors to indicate ownership – and to synchronize their incubation period to maximize production. To help ensure the women’s success, the project has provided them with training on poultry production techniques and financial management. While the women enjoy their new source of income from selling chicks in the local markets and to wholesalers, they are also help other women and young people benefit from poultry production. They have given 5 or 10 chicks to several of their neighbours and are teaching them what they, themselves, have learned from the project.

The Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) is building on the significant achievements of the earlier Livestock and Pasture Development Project to stimulate inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in rural Tajikistan. Since 2018, the CASP has provided benefits to more than 51,000 households in 177 rural villages in Khatlon Oblast, Soghd and Republican Subordination Regions. Its activities are helping communities and smallholder (dehkan) farmers access productive infrastructure and services, leading to sustainable agricultural production, equitable income-generating opportunities and improved living standards.

The CASP works with Village Organizations (VOs) to develop community-driven action plans that define their own improvement initiatives. Village-level participation in decision making is critical to the success of these plans and helps establish a sense of community ownership and cohesion.
