Zevarbi Nozilova (foreground, green headscarf) is the Head of the women’s income-generating group supported by the Nimich Village Organization to process fruits and vegetables. The project provided the group of 14 women with canning equipment and supplies, and each woman received 100 jars. In May 2022, the women are busy canning wild-growing rhubarb and other seasonal plants, mostly with medicinal values. In the summer, they preserve the other fruits and vegetables that grow in their gardens – tomatoes, cucumbers, apricots, apples and cherries – either drying or canning them to make jams, fruit compotes, vegetable salads. They use some for their own household consumption and sell the rest. They recycle the used glass jars, but save some of the money they earn to buy new lids and jars, sugar and salt for the next canning season. “The project provided us with food processing equipment and jars. We lost so much of our fruits and vegetables before because we didn’t have the means to preserve them. We sell the products we make and use our income mainly to buy school supplies and clothes for our children.” During the pandemic period, the women used the things they had preserved. Most of them also have honey bees and there was also chicken meat and eggs available from the poultry production group. Zevarbi has 9 children, but five of them were born with a condition where they could not open their eyes. An NGO provided them with operations so that they could gain their eyesight. This activity has helped her to provide plentiful food to her large family, improving their nutrition and living standard. The Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) is building on the significant achievements of the earlier Livestock and Pasture Development Project to stimulate inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in rural Tajikistan. Since 2018, the CASP has provided benefits to more than 51,000 households in 177 rural villages in Khatlon Oblast, Soghd and Republican Subordination Regions. Its activities are helping communities and smallholder (dehkan) farmers access productive infrastructure and services, leading to sustainable agricultural production, equitable income-generating opportunities and improved living standards. The CASP works with Village Organizations (VOs) to develop community-driven action plans that define their own improvement initiatives. Village-level participation in decision making is critical to the success of these plans and helps establish a sense of community ownership and cohesion. |
