Implemented through the Sustainable Management of Natural Resources, Communal Equipment and the Organization of Rural Producers Project (PROGRES), IFAD’s Rural Poor Stimulus Facility (RPSF) established distribution centres in twelve localities in southwestern Mauritania’s semi-arid Guidimaka Region. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the project identified 21 of the poorest households in each of the villages and provided them with COVID “survival kits” that contained personal hygiene and safety supplies, such as gel soap and masks.
The RPSF also provided a total 38 female goats – 36 does and 2 bucks - divided among twelve vulnerable families in the village. The village chief received three females and one of the male goats. The two males goats are shared for the purposes of managing the village goat breeding programme. The main objective of the programme was to increase the number of goats each household owns, with the aim of increasing their income. The recipients of these goats were meant to use them for breeding and not for food or to sell. Once the goats have reproduced, the livestock owners can choose to sell them to earn income, to eat them or to keep them and continue to grow their herd size. The project provides veterinarians who travel to the village to vaccinate and care for the animals’ health, as well as animal feed.
PROGRES aims to empower the rural poor in their sustainable access to natural resources and community facilities. The project targets vulnerable farmers, women, youth, poor households, pastoralists and agro-pastoralists.
The Rural Poor Stimulus Facility (RPSF) provided PROGRES with additional funds to support its programmes and enable the rural communities to resist and rebuild from the COVID-19 pandemic. The RPSF provided livestock inputs, veterinary services and technical support and training on production. It also provided information on veterinary services and market information via radio, text messages and other digital platforms.
