Title: Angola - The Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture Project (AFAP) – March 2023
Description: João Cesar Binzole, is the father of 12 children and a grandfather to 9. Born in Malanje, he is the founding member of the Binzole cooperative, responsible for the organization of the community, and field work, sales work and rations.

"Before, we worked to survive and we didn't always have income. The project impacted my life in the best possible way. No one was aware that this would be a source of income. However, today the members of the cooperative already manage to earn income from services that enable them to financially support their families."

Even during hard times, we managed to have food on the table and through difficult phases such as deaths there were subsidies to be given to the families of the deceased.

The most important impact was undoubtedly training, thus leaving the community with teachings and wisdom for life. Joao Cesar shares that, with these learnings, they have managed to walk alone and teach others, as well as start new projects with the tools to make them work.

The aim of the Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture Project (AFAP) is to improve food security and nutrition among artisanal inland fishing and fish-farming households. Through the Binzole Cooperative (Vila Maltide/Quissole Community), a rural community located in Malanje Province, about 417 Kms north/west of Luanda, nearly 50 families are supported by the project with 48 ponds excavated and stocked, and provided with pond maintenance material and security kits. AFAP has had a positive impact on income generating activities for both smallholder inland fisheries and aquaculture.
