The sign shows visitors the way towards “La Fortuna” estate, where the “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra) tourist experience takes place. “Cacao de la Sierra” is the brainchild of Johny Serrano (22 years old) and Camilo Chinchilla (29 years old). This tourist route was born as the final project in the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” initiative (Hosts for Peace), part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project, developed by ICCO Cooperation in partnership with IFAD. The idea was to turn Johny’s family cacao plantation into an attractive and educative experience for tourists. Since then, this project has become an income source for Johny and his family, and it is a business which involves five families in the San Rafael community. Not just that, but Johny has also inspired other young people in the area to launch their own enterprises. “I have friends who also have cacao plantations, and they have told me they also want to create a cacao tour”, Johny says. “I tell them ‘I’ll be glad to help you. I have the knowledge, and I can help you do it”. |
