Tiburcio Marca Aguilar is a llama and alpaca producer in the Bolivian highlands. His smile is inspired by the multiple championships his animals have won at camelid fairs over the years. "In that way I have several memories of my animals. They are my source of work, my joy," says Tiburcio from his home on the Tholatia ranch in the Cosapa community of the Turco municipality in Oruro, Bolivia. In an effort to diversify their income, the Association of Camelid Livestock Producers, currently led by Tiburcio and 25 other beneficiaries, has received sheds and mobile pens for the care and feeding of camelids. They have also initiated forage cultivation projects, exploring the possibility of introducing new crops such as oats. Despite the challenges, the association focuses on improving fiber quality and shearing, seeking direct access to the industry for better prices. Additionally, they have plans to expand water-related projects, taking advantage of programs to have a significant impact on the region. |
