Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: It took them ten years to find the best recipe. The members of the Asociación de Productores Agroganaderos de Turco (APAT) say that it took them a decade, amid trials and errors, to find the balance point in the recipe to obtain a llama chorizo with good flavor and high quality. Their main censors were the customers who, little by little, gave them feedback on the shortcomings and successes of their product. Today, in 2023, they are proud to have achieved their goal. Llama sausages, for example, are produced in the sausage room of APAT's llama meat processing plant in the municipality of Turco, in the Andean region of Bolivia. Much of the machinery was obtained through the Pro-Camelids program and financial support from IFAD. "To improve quality, it has been depending on the client, especially for the sausage.
First of all, it has been very salty. We want it to improve a little more,' we have been told, 'it must improve a little more. I have improved through the clients," recalls Agustina Choque, 56, a member of APAT.

The design of the Pro-Camelidos program reflects the integration of previous experiences and lessons learned from previous interventions. Its approach seeks to address the challenges of the camelid producer sector, facing obstacles in primary production, such as low productivity, quality and yield, inadequate livestock management, limited availability of pasture and water due to the deterioration of natural resources, and climate change, the expansion of the quinoa agricultural frontier, the low value added of the raw material and insufficient access to services such as veterinary services and inputs. It also focuses on improving processing and marketing processes.

The PROCAMELIDOS project is an initiative aimed to improve the living conditions of 25,000 families linked to the camelid value chain, while ensuring the sustainable management of natural resources in 30 municipalities in the highland area of Bolivia.
