Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: For several decades, René Soto Vadillo, 43, had to carry water for many kilometers for his own consumption and that of his llamas and alpacas. First on foot and then in his car, the situation was disappointing, considering the aridity of the terrain. However, after conducting a study, a significant change in his perspective was generated. Initially skeptical about the possibility of finding water in such an arid environment, he turned to the IFAD-funded Pro-Camelidos study to see if a water pump could work in his community, Chijñacota. After the photovoltaic pump installed on his land began to work, everything was happiness in his life and in the lives of his neighbors. Chojñacota is located in the municipality of San Pedro de Totora. The inauguration and start-up of the system took place on October 3, 2023. In the photo he explains to Doña Elena Calle Sajama how the pump works. "They (Pro-Camelidos-FIDA) have done the study; I didn't think there was going to be water, I don't know, what is so dry. I said, 'Yes, we'll do the study,' and they told me, 'If you have water here, my brother, don't worry. That made me happy," explains René.

Among Pro-Camelidos' objectives is to address a series of challenges affecting the producer sector by seeking to overcome obstacles in primary production. These challenges include low productivity, poor quality and yield, as well as inadequate livestock management in terms of size. The limited availability of pasture and water, attributed to the deterioration of natural resources and climate change, also figure among the problems to be faced. The expansion of the quinoa agricultural frontier, the low value added of the raw material and the lack of access to vital services such as veterinary services and inputs are also addressed.
