Title: Vietnam – Project for Adaption to Climate Change in the Mekong Delta in Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) – April 2023
Description:
Mrs. Thach Thi Lan, 56 years old with 2 children, lives in Lac Thanh B hamlet, Thanh Hoa Son commune, Cau Ngang district, Tra Vinh province. She earns VND 4,000,000 per month (US$ 165) making traditional paper unicorn heads. Her workplace provides an entertaining place also for her grandson who she is able to watch after as she works.

“I used to live in a poor household, without productive land or a job. Since I joined the Common Interest Group project making traditional paper unicorn heads, I have a stable job with a salary. With my income, my family now has enough to eat and I can buy better clothes for my grandchildren.”

The Adaptation in the Mekong Delta in the Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) project provided support to the Hong Phuc Household Common Interest Group (CIG) that makes traditional paper unicorn heads in Lac Thanh B hamlet, Thanh Hoa Son commune, Cau Ngang district, Tra Vinh province. The group started in 2018 with 9 women.

Paper unicorn heads are used in many performances during moon festivals and special ceremonies in Vietnam and are in high demand. Crafting them offers a good income-generating opportunity for women, especially during times when they are not busy cultivating their crops. The activity has created stable jobs for 17 local women, all of whom are Khmer ethnic minority.
With AMD support, the CIG has increased its average income by 50 per cent, up from US$3,000 to US$4,500 per month.

The Project for Adaptation to Climate Change in the Mekong Delta in the Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) strengthened the resilience and adaptive capacity of 54,000 smallholder farmer households by generating sustainable income opportunities and improved rural livelihoods, reaching an estimated 210,000 people. To this end, AMD invests in climate resilient, inclusive, and remunerative value chain opportunities, including coconut, fruits, and aquaculture.
