Title: Malawi - Transforming Agriculture Through Diversification and Entrepreneurship Programme (TRADE) – January 2024
Description: Lloyd Phale, aged 42, and his wife Alefa Ofesa, aged 45, from Makosana village TA Kambudula Ukwe EPA, Lilongwe district, started farming in 2003. In 2022, they started receiving support through the IFAD-supported TRADE programme.

Through the programme, Lloyd and Alefa received training and were introduced to technologies such as double-row planting and box educators (physical structures or measures implemented to prevent soil erosion and manage surface runoff including techniques such as building terraces, contour ploughing, or constructing check dams to slow down water flow and prevent soil from being washed away) to address climate challenges. In addition, they also raise free-range chickens as part of their farming activities.

Through this support, Lloyd and Alefa have seen a positive impact as they have improved their productivity which has allowed them to earn more. Alefa plans to use the additional income for her three children’s education and to purchase an ox cart for transportation. TRADE has allowed her and her family to have a better livelihood and to support her children’s aspirations.

The Transforming Agriculture through Diversification and Entrepreneurship (TRADE) Programme, supported by IFAD, promotes climate-smart agriculture and nutrition so that smallholder households can become more resilient to natural shocks and enhance their food and nutrition security.
