Title: Malawi - Crisis Response Initiative (CRI) – January 2024
Description: Kitty Siliya, a 43-year-old farmer from a village in the Somba Blantyre region. Her field was washed away by cyclone Freddy which also impacted her neighbours, some of whom lost their homes as well. In the aftermath, well-wishers from the village and neighbours helped the less fortunate ones by bringing them food.

Before the cyclone, Kitty was a project participant of the Sustainable Agricultural Production Programme (SAPP). Through SAPP, funds were mobilised via the Crisis Response Initiative (CRI) to support those affected by the cyclone Freddy, which had caught people by surprise, leaving the village in confusion and devastated. As such, she and other participants received 10 kg of maize seeds and two 50 kg bags of fertilizer to help support their recovery.

Through the support received from CRI, Kitty is optimistic about the future and anticipates to have improved crop yields.

The Sustainable Agricultural Production Programme (SAPP) focuses on enhancing agricultural productivity and improving rural food security through simple, affordable technologies, which help smallholder farmers bridge the wide gap between actual and possible food-crop yields in Malawi.

IFAD’s role in a crisis is to build resilience and capacity of rural communities to mitigate the impact of shocks, while protecting long term development gains. For this reason, the Crisis Response Initiative (CRI) was set-up, to protect the livelihoods and build resilience in rural communities by addressing the urgent needs caused by the crises. One such crisis was cyclone Freddy which hit Malawi in February 2023 and heavily affected the Southern region of the country.
