Title: Malawi - Crisis Response Initiative (CRI) – January 2024
Description: Violet Kazembe is a 43-year-old mother of three children. Her husband is a tailor. She lives in Mpira village, TA Likoswe where she is a full-time farmer. On her land she grows irrigated and rainfed maize and tomato cultivations. Through CRI, Violet received some goats.

Violet faced challenges when cyclone Freddy washed away half of her riverbank-adjacent field, resulting in significant crop loss. With support from extension workers, immediate action was taken to reinforce the riverbanks to prevent future calamities.

The cyclone left Violet's family and her community without food supplies of their own production. Through the extension worker, Violet became a project participant of CRI through which she received relief packages and some goats. These goats not only contribute to crop cultivation through their manure but with what she will earn from selling them, Violet will be able to cover school fees and meet a number of other livelihood needs.

Having received five goats last month, Violet plans to breed them and pass on five to the next beneficiary in the community. However, they are facing challenges because the goats haven’t adapted yet to the new environment, so the extension worker has placed them under observation and treatment. Violet envisions using the goats for selling, utilizing their manure for crops, and consuming meat and milk for family nutrition.

IFAD’s role in a crisis is to build resilience and capacity of rural communities to mitigate the impact of shocks, while protecting long term development gains. For this reason, the Crisis Response Initiative (CRI) was set-up, to protect the livelihoods and build resilience in rural communities by addressing the urgent needs caused by the crises. One such crisis was cyclone Freddy which hit Malawi in February 2023 and heavily affected the Southern region of the country.
