Title: Malawi - Crisis Response Initiative (CRI) – January 2024
Description: Kondwani McNight is a 21-year-old farmer, married to Mwayiwawo Kapasa, from Chikuakua village in Balaka district. Before cyclone Freddy, the challenges he faced were food insecurity and soil erosion due to climate change. The cyclone further accentuated these issues as well as created other problems as his land and crops were washed away, he lost his goats and chickens and it caused his house to collapse.

Through CRI, Kondwani has received rabbits to raise. As they reproduce, some he will give to other project particpants, others he will sell and others he will use for family consumption. The rabbit meat will also help his family from a nutrition point of view. Furthermore, given the escalating prices of fertiliser, he will be using the rabbits’ dropping as fertiliser.

CRI has also provided Kondwani and other farmers with training on soil and water conservation and, in his case, on the management of the rabbits.
Kondowani anticipates having good returns from the investment which he will use to buy other things he and his family need. He also hopes for a better life after the project compared to the situation he had previously; he hopes to uplift his livelihood.

The support received from the project is a starting point for Kondwani and his family. He sees this as an opportunity to develop further and be able to support his family with things such as school fees once he has children and sustain his household.

IFAD’s role in a crisis is to build resilience and capacity of rural communities to mitigate the impact of shocks, while protecting long term development gains. For this reason, the Crisis Response Initiative (CRI) was set-up, to protect the livelihoods and build resilience in rural communities by addressing the urgent needs caused by the crises. One such crisis was cyclone Freddy which hit Malawi in February 2023 and heavily affected the Southern region of the country.
