Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description:
Musayor Mirzosho is a tractor mechanic for the Jafr Village Organization (VO) in Jafr Village in north-eastern Tajikistan’s Rasht District. The VO identified agricultural machinery as a priority in their community development plan and received the tractor and other heavy machinery from the project. The VO accountant schedules and collects fees for services provided by the machine operators, who are paid 30 per cent of the contract price.

Musayor now has a fulltime job in the village and no longer needs to migrate to the Russian Federation in search of work. He maintains the VO’s machinery to keep it in good condition to prepare the fields for cultivation at the right times and for a fee that is much more affordable, thus leading to greater productivity and profit farmers in the community and surrounding villages. The machinery is used to provide services to community members and also generates income for the VO. The VO uses some of its income to procure other tools they need in order to provide better, inexpensive services to farmers, leading to better crop capacity and productivity.

The Community-based Agriculture Support Project (CASP) stimulates inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in rural Tajikistan. Its activities help communities and dehkan (smallholder) family farmers access productive infrastructure and services, leading to sustainable agricultural production, equitable income-generating opportunities, and improved living standards. CASP works with village organizations (VOs) to develop community-driven action plans that define their own improvement initiatives. Village-level participation in decision making is critical to the success of these plans and helps establish a sense of community ownership and cohesion.
