Title: Tunisia - Economic, Social and Solidarity Project (IESS) – May 2024
Description: As there is no drinking water in the houses in the isolated rural area in Chrichira, the inhabitants are forced to fetch water from far away, and it is the women who take on this task.

Feiza (50), accompanied by other women, makes the long, arduous walk of more than three kilometres to reach a waterhole in the middle of the countryside. There they fill their plastic cans with water before carrying them on a donkey back, if they are lucky enough to have one.

"Sometimes we find water, sometimes not, often once every four days, sometimes once a week. Sometimes the water is cut off for more than two weeks," says Feiza. “At home, every drop of water is precious. That's why we ration it," she explains.

She also says that women even fetch water at night when it is very hot in the summer. She explains that women fear being attacked by wild animals or bitten by snakes during their nightly walks. If they return home late after collecting water, women often face problems with their husbands. To avoid this problem, they are often accompanied by a trusted, older woman.

Feiza hopes that the new water tower project will see the light of day as it will solve the problem of lack of drinking water.
The new water tower, part of the IFAD-funded Economic, Social and Solidarity Integration Project (IESS Kairouan), will provide access to drinking water for the region's inhabitants, who face water stress resulting in water shortages and frequent water cuts.

The water tower will therefore serve as a water reserve and, above all, to distribute drinking water to the surrounding houses at a constant pressure.
