Sing and his wife pose for a portrait with their chickens at their farm. Sing is 42 and his wife Koud is 38. Their household is composed by their three children, 7, 14 and 16 years old and Sing’s parents. Sing and Koud engage in various agricultural activities such as chicken breeding, paddy rice cultivation, cardamon production and they also have a rubber plantation. Sing is the lead farmer of the community, and his role is to pass his farming knowledge to other farmers. Although the family engage in various agricultural activities the harvest from their paddy field is too small to feed the seven family members, and they must rely on the market to buy more rice and sell their agricultural produce. The Agriculture for Nutrition (AFN) Programme supported Sing’s family with a new breed of chicken which is more resilient and larger, with a new chicken coup and with different types of chicken feed. Sing and his wife also received trainings in animal husbandry through the project. Sing says that “Thanks to the chickens provided with the support of the AFN programme my family can have more food and we can sell the new resilient breed of chickens on the market for good price”. |
