Title: | Laos - Partnerships for Irrigation and Commercialisation of Smallholder Agriculture (PICSA) - September 2024 |
Description: |
Sengthong and his wife Davone pose for a portrait at their farm. The communal pig shelter and their paddy fields are visible in the background. Sengthong is a farmer from Xieng Ngeun village in Luang Prabang province. Apart of growing paddy rice, Sengthong used to breed pigs without paying too much attention to animal husbandry techniques. Since he participated in the Partnerships for Irrigation and Commercialization of Smallholder Agriculture (PICSA), funded by IFAD, Senthong had the chance to attend trainings on pig farm management. The trainings gave him the chance to learn new techniques in pig husbandry such as building a pig pen and vaccinating pigs. He was also given a sow (female pig) by the project, who has already given birth three times. “I was able to sell at least 35 piglets since the PICSA project” He sold his piglets to Sonephan Trading Import/Export Company. His sales are made much easier thanks to the new access road to the village build by PICSA. Significantly cutting travel times and granting all year access to the village, the farmers can now sell their produce to the nearby markets and traders can access the village. Due to the road, pigs, other livestock, and agricultural produce can now be moved in bulk, cutting the costs thus increasing profits for the farmers in Xieng Ngeun village. |
