Ethiopia - South–South and Triangular Cooperation/ Inter–Africa Bamboo Smallholder Farmers Livelihood Development Programme – September 2024
Description:
Medahanit lives in Hawassa, a town in southern Ethiopia. She is taking care of her mother thanks to her bamboo activity. She was first trained with bamboo in 2006 and kept improving her skills. In 2021 the Hawassa City Municipality gave her a workshop near the Hawassa lake to sell her bamboo products. She also received skill development trainings and tools from the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR) supported projects. She says she is the only one in Hawassa producing basket-based crafts. She sells to hotels and coffee shops, but she also created market linkages to Addis Ababa and different towns near Hawassa. She loves what she does: ‘This job needs to be based on passion. If you are passionate, nothing is difficult. It is simple’, she says.
