Title: | Ethiopia - South–South and Triangular Cooperation/ Inter–Africa Bamboo Smallholder Farmers Livelihood Development Programme – September 2024 |
Description: |
Abraham is Director of the Forestry Development Directorate for the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Authority, in the Sidama Region. Bamboo is an abundant resource in the Sidama Regional State of Ethiopia and it has high economic and environmental values. Beyond its impact on air quality, bamboo is good for soil fertility and water purification, he explains. ‘We are using [bamboo seedlings] heavily around the lake Hawassa. They are now letting filtered soil to the lake instead of the contaminated soil that used to run to the lake’, he says – enabling a reduction in siltation of the lake. Moreover, thanks to INBAR’s support (International Bamboo and Rattan Organization), many unemployed people and uneducated youth are now involved in bamboo craft activities, benefiting the livelihood of local communities. |
