Farmer Zerifu cultivates a 0.5 hectares parcel of bamboo in Wule Horeda, in the Sidama region of southern Ethiopia. He lives with his extended family in a traditional hut made of bamboo. For him, bamboo coexists with human life: it is a source of income, it is food and clothes – houses and even coffins are made of bamboo. Zerifu received training on how to grow and care for bamboos through the INBAR project and he has since increased both the quality and the quantity of his bamboo production. His increased income enables him to pay for his children’s education: ‘I don't worry anymore about children's education, food, transport, and clothes because the income from bamboo’, he says. |
