Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: Juan José Bedoya, 52, is one of the camelid producers in the Cosapa community in the municipality of Turco in Oruro, Bolivia. One morning in October 2023, Juan José went out to graze a slender K'ara llama, which won a contest for its good coat and height. They went to get water for the animal from the Huilapata River that runs through the property of one of their neighbors, Tiburcio Marca Aguilar.

Juan José, like his neighbors, begins his days very early in the frigid lands of western Bolivia. The economy of these people is based on the breeding and commercialization of llamas and alpacas in various forms. In some cases, they sell their meat, in others, they make jerky (dehydrated and salted meat) for their own consumption and also for sale. In other instances, they sell live specimens, and they also focus on selling their fiber for the production of high-quality clothing.
