Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: A K'ara llama, of slender build, has been recognized for its good coat and height. It is owned by Tiburcio Marca Aguilar, a community member from Cosapa in the Oruro municipality of Turco in the Bolivian highlands. The Huilapata River flows through Tiburcio's property, a place called Tholatia. This situation is very beneficial for him and his family because, beyond the obvious benefit of having water in a remote place in the countryside, the animals they raise, llamas and alpacas, take advantage of this resource to supply themselves on a daily basis. "But this river is temporary. For now we use it, but we have it now anyway, but another (producer) in my group does not have it. We are also asking for support in terms of water; it is essential for all our animals," explains Tiburcio.

According to the Pro-Camélidos Llama and Alpaca Judging Manual for the contests in which they participate, the admission committee takes on the responsibility of discarding specimens that exhibit various hereditary or congenital defects during the evaluation process. This includes animals with phenotypic characteristics not in line with the llama or alpaca species. Likewise, those presenting genetic and congenital defects in the genital organs are excluded. Therefore, it is crucial for Tiburcio and other producers to take utmost care of their animals.
