Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: With the support of the Pro-Camelids program, the llamas and alpacas of 26 families located in the Turco municipality have benefited from eight sheds and 10 mobile corrals in Oruro, Bolivia. This means greater protection for these animals against adverse scenarios such as frosts that come with extremely cold winds in this altiplano sector of the country or against the possible attack of foxes and pumas that inhabit these areas. This allows producers to raise their camelid livestock more safely. In the photo, Tiburcio Marca Aguilar accompanies his animals on their daily walk to graze and drink water from the Huilapata River that flows through his property.

Unlike other community members, Tiburcio has this watercourse at his disposal, which is a blessing for him and his family. From his perspective, the sale of his camelid livestock becomes an essential component of his life in Cosapa. With a reflective tone, he mentions the marketing of derived products, such as jerky, to local intermediaries, as one of the pillars of the regional economy.

Roberto Bonifacio, the national coordinator of the Pro-Camélidos Program, recently shared his experience during the visit of the IFAD technical team to the communities. He emphasized the importance of verifying results in the field and establishing direct contact with beneficiaries who are engaged in camelid breeding. He underscored the effectiveness of the IFAD's support and advisory mechanism in the successful implementation of productive infrastructure and business plans in these communities.
