Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: Elsa Chambi Ramirez owns a "winning" specimen of huacaya alpaca between her cattle on her property located in the Tholatia estate in the Cosapa community, belonging to the municipality of Turco in Oruro, Bolivia. She, along with her husband, Tiburcio Marca Aguilar, benefited from the construction of a shed to provide better protection for their animals from the high-altitude cold. It is crucial for them to care for their livestock as it is their livelihood through participation in competitions that reward physical characteristics and the quality of their fiber. In the past, fiber used to have a value of three or four Bolivians per pound, around half a dollar. But currently, it is quoted at least at 22 or 25 Bolivians, nearly four dollars per pound. The evolution is also reflected in alpaca production, which used to yield one or two pounds of fiber, especially the improved ones. Nowadays, each animal can weigh around seven pounds, proving profitable for Tiburcio's family and their neighbors who also engage in camelid livestock breeding to harness its various benefits.

Regarding the assistance they received, the infrastructure is part of the Pro-Camélidos program, funded by FIDA. Tiburcio and Elsa, as a family, dedicate themselves to raising llamas and alpacas to compete in events that reward the quality of these animals. The fundamental purpose of the program is to proactively address challenges faced by the camelid producers' sector. It focuses on reducing key obstacles in primary production, addressing issues such as low productivity, quality, and performance, inadequate livestock management, and limited availability of pasture and water, affected by the deterioration of natural resources and climate change. Additionally, the program tackles critical issues in transformation and marketing processes, such as the lack of technical assistance, high production costs, weaknesses in market access, insufficient access to financial services, and the lack of effective relationships among various actors in the production complex.
