Tiburcio Marca Aguilar has dedicated his entire life to raising camelids. A native of the Cosapa community, belonging to the municipality of Turco in Oruro, Bolivia, he recalls that he began this type of work at the age of 13. Today, on the verge of turning 49, his wife Elisa Chambi Ramirez supports him and his five children, four boys and one girl. In one of the rooms of his property, the Tholatia ranch, he has countless trophies of recognition for the quality of his animals. Whether in the form of sashes or rosettes, the trophies adorn, like a museum, the place that the Marca family has designated as their daily dining room. "As I go to the regional championship, I always take at least two prizes in each category. I'm going with 14, 18, animals". Tiburcio is one of the beneficiaries of Pro-Camélidos, funded by IFAD, with the construction of a shed to shelter his livestock. From the perspective of Pro-Camélidos, the program aims to address the challenges faced by the camelid producers' sector. Key obstacles in primary production include low productivity, quality, and performance, inadequate management of herd sizes, limited availability of pasture and water due to natural resource deterioration and climate change, the expansion of quinoa agriculture, insufficient added value to raw materials, and inadequate access to services such as veterinary care and inputs. Additionally, in transformation and marketing processes, Pro-Camélidos identifies challenges that include the lack of technical assistance, high production costs, weaknesses in market access, insufficient access to financial services, and the absence of effective relationships among different actors in the production complex. To overcome these obstacles, Pro-Camélidos has designed and implemented a long-term strategy focused on the sustainability of associative enterprises, with a focus on improving market access and strengthening organization in the sector. |
