Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: In places like Cosapa the traditional breakfast of farmers consists, on many occasions, of hot api and buñuelos. The “api” is a drink made from purple corn and has a sweet taste. The buñuelos are a substitute for bread and are relatively easy to prepare. The preparation of buñuelos, which are fried in oil, usually requires flour, lard, yeast, sugar, salt and sometimes aniseed. Cosapa is a cold place located in the municipality of Turco in the department of Oruro, Bolivia, very close to the border with Chile. In this place the breeding of llamas and alpacas is the mainstay of the economy of their families.

Tiburcio is one of the beneficiaries of the Pro-Camélidos program, funded by IFAD. Through this program, he was able to build a shelter so that his llamas and alpacas do not suffer from the cold and are safe from predators such as foxes and pumas, two characteristic animals of this Andean region. Over the last six years, the Bolivian government has led this project with the aim of promoting significant improvements in the living conditions of families associated with the camelid complex. This effort translates into a sustained increase in livestock productivity, supported by climate change-resistant actions. The initiative has marked a milestone in the development landscape, consolidating tangible progress that addresses current challenges and contributes to the sustainable prosperity of the involved communities.
