Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: The sheds are a key pillar of Pro-Camélidos project support to producers in the Bolivian altiplano regions. This infrastructure, financed by IFAD, is aimed at improving the living conditions of camelid livestock. In the case of Tiburcio Marca Aguilar's family, the construction of a shed was of great help in protecting their llamas and alpacas from the cold and rain, as well as from predators such as foxes and pumas. The family's ranch is located in the Cosapa community of the Turco municipality in Oruro, Bolivia. "So, at that time, we also had already foreseen a little bit of counterpart, we had sold cattle, some fabrics, some fiber, charque, sometimes we always have some males that are already there. We have all tried to be able to put up the counterpart" to collaborate in the construction of this and other sheds in the area, Tiburcio explains.

In 2015, when the project design was introduced, various practices were proposed, ranging from the recovery of ancestral knowledge to the incorporation of new knowledge adapted to local contexts. In the field of nutrition, efficient management of grass and forage, the recovery of wetlands, native meadows, and native germplasm were emphasized. Additionally, the conservation of grass and forage through practices such as haymaking and ensilage was considered, along with the implementation of forage enclosures. However, one of the essential pillars of the project focuses on improving small-scale productive infrastructure, including the construction of sheds, fundamental elements for providing shelter and protection to animals in adverse weather conditions.
