Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: Verónica Calle Chuquichambi accompanies her llamas to the shed after several days of grazing. Verónica is one of the beneficiaries of the construction of sheds for the care of camelid livestock in the western region of Bolivia. Leader of the Chojñacota community of the Aparu ayllu in the municipality of San Pedro de Totora in the department of Oruro, Verónica is grateful for the opportunity given to her by Pro-Camélidos with financing from IFAD to build the shed for her llamas. "Sometimes foxes and pumas would come, and now the llamas are safe. They will be better off in the corral/shed. So, it's to protect them.

The Program seeks to address the problems of the camelid producing sector, reducing difficulties or obstacles in primary production. These challenges include low productivity, quality and yield; inadequate livestock management; limited availability of pasture and water due to the deterioration of natural resources and climate change; expansion of the quinoa agricultural frontier; low added value of raw materials; and insufficient access to services such as veterinary services and inputs. Likewise, in the processing and marketing processes, problems have been identified such as the lack of technical assistance, high production costs, weak market access, lack of access to financial services and the lack of relationships between the different actors in the production complex.
