After a long day's work, leader Verónica Calle Chuquichambi, 23, is ready to return home almost 45 minutes by car from the main square of the Chojñacota community in the municipality of San Pedro de Totora, Oruro, Bolivia. On some occasions, when it is her turn to travel by bicycle, the trip can take more than two hours on steep roads, surrounded by a landscape adorned by llamas and alpacas, by streams and grasslands, very characteristic elements of the place. Dressed in clothes made of llama and sheep fiber, her life is circumscribed to the field and these animals in one way or another. She, along with her family, was one of the beneficiaries of the construction of sheds to care for her camelid livestock. This was possible thanks to the support of Pro-Camelidos, with financial support from IFAD. As part of the initiatives carried out by the Bolivian Ministry of Rural Development and Lands, through Pro-Camelidos, the Government reaffirms its commitment to continuously strengthen the camelid livestock producing sector through strategic investments. These investments are aimed at improving the productive and reproductive indices of llamas and alpacas, as well as promoting the transformation of products and by-products derived from the fiber and meat of these animals. |
