Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description:
Sadbarg Khujaeva, 44 years old, is a member of the Women’s Income Generating Group for permanent greenhouses in Chal Chal Village, Norak District. She is also a schoolteacher, teaching the upper grade students at the local public school. Her husband is a migrant worker in the Russian Federation. He sends money to support the family, but it is not enough.
As head of her household, Sadbarg now earns money from gardening that allows her to care for her seven children and grandchildren.

CASP provided the women’s group with a greenhouse in February 2023, and everything they needed to get started: tools, water tanks, seeds and seedlings, as well as fertilizer. For their first crop, the women cultivated potatoes, harvesting 650 kg. They are growing bell peppers and some cucumbers as their second crop.

“I get up early in the mornings and come here to the greenhouse. I see how the plants are growing. We did not have access to a nearby market where we could buy vegetables before. Now that we have the greenhouse, we have vegetables. We also sell them. I spend the money I earn for my children’s education.”

Having the greenhouse is an additional source of income and plays a key role in the women’s lives. It has improved their well-being, including their food security. They preserve vegetables for winter. And instead of buying potatoes, for example, at 1 somoni per kilo, they now grow their own.

The Community-based Agriculture Support Project (CASP) stimulates inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in rural Tajikistan. Its activities help communities and dehkan (smallholder) family farmers access productive infrastructure and services, leading to sustainable agricultural production, equitable income-generating opportunities, and improved living standards. CASP works with village organizations (VOs) to develop community-driven action plans that define their own improvement initiatives. Village-level participation in decision making is critical to the success of these plans and helps establish a sense of community ownership and cohesion.
