Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: Lorenzo Calle Mollo and Pascual Soto Mollo play the tarka, a wind instrument typical of the Andean area of Bolivia. They gathered in early October 2023, in the Chojñacota community of the Orureño municipality of San Pedro de Totora, to celebrate the inauguration of a photovoltaic pumping system for the extraction of water that will feed the local camelid livestock and also several families.
They, like all the inhabitants of this region, have dedicated some stage of their lives to raising camelid livestock for different purposes. Many do it to take advantage of the llama and alpaca fibers and make special fabrics; others, on the other hand, aim to take advantage of the meat of these animals, especially llamas, for their daily diet and also for sale in nearby markets such as Oruro and even in La Paz. The fact of having water available through a solar-powered pump is a source of rejoicing for locals and strangers alike, since they can use the liquid element to supply themselves daily and also to feed their animals.

This pumping system was made possible thanks to the support of Pro-Camélidos and financing from IFAD. Pro-Camélidos embarks on a mission to improve the living conditions of families involved in raising these animals, while seeking to increase livestock productivity through sustainable management of natural resources in the municipalities of La Paz, Oruro and Potosí in the western region of Bolivia.
