Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: Amid a rugged landscape, René Soto Vadillo, 43, shows one of the Chojñacota community members how the solar panel water pumping system that was delivered to him in early October 2023 works. René Soto recalls that his parents faced water shortages in conditions of poverty. Driven by the desire to avoid living in a place without access to water, René recognizes the vital importance of this resource for life. He clearly remembers the act of begging his neighbor for water and the practice of carrying it for miles. Now, with a system that allows him to have water pumped by solar panels, René decided to make a significant change in his life. He opted to build a new home near the pump, ensuring a more sustainable and accessible water supply. This decision reflects his determination to improve his quality of life.

The IFAD-funded project, promoted by Pro-Camelidos, will allow René and other families to benefit for their personal use and also to provide water for their camelid livestock in this region, which, according to locals, is experiencing extreme drought. Pro-Camelidos' mission is to improve the living conditions of families associated with the camelid complex and increase livestock productivity. This is achieved through the sustainable management of natural resources in the municipalities of La Paz, Oruro and Potosí.
