Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description:
Zarina Kurbanalieva, 30 years old, lives with her husband and three children in Mohinav Village in the Dusti district of southwestern Tajikistan’s Khatlon Region. She is one of 10 women selected by CASP to participate in a women’s income generating group (WIGG) for permanent greenhouses.

CASP installed five greenhouses with drip irrigation where women work in groups of two to grow vegetables. The first crop Zarina grew was potatoes, then cucumbers. She has also grown tomatoes, and plans to start growing vegetable seedlings that she will sell in local markets.

“In the past we did not grow fresh vegetables in our household plots.
We used to buy them. But now we have it, and we also preserve the vegetables to eat during the winter.”

Zarina’s husband used to go to the Russian Federation as a migrant labourer, but now he stays home and helps her market the produce in the markets. Clients also buy directly from her at her home. With the money they are earning, they can afford school uniforms for their children and have also managed to buy a television set.

“We make a good income, and it helps us.”
