Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: For Johny Serrano and his family, residents of the vereda San Rafael [administrative subdivision of a municipality], cacao represents a second chance. “We were victims of the armed conflict, back in 2003”, says Johny. His parents, who grew coca and marijuana as many other farmers in the region, were displaced from their lands. “When they tell that story, it is with pain. It’s a sad story, those were hard times. It is awful having to leave at two in the morning, nothing but your clothes, pitch-black; to lose stuff for which you have worked and fought so hard. My parents lost relatives who were killed”.

Johny and his family received two hectares of land from the Colombian government in 2005, as well as 1.200 cacao plants. Since then, the Serrano family has been living off cacao… And, more recently, Johny has found a new way to make their plantation profitable: thanks to the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” (Hosts for Peace) initiative and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project, Johny designed the “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra) tourist route. This tour provides a first-hand experience on how cacao is grown and transformed in the region.
