Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: Plantain tree in “La Fortuna” estate, San Rafael, Magdalena department.

Johny’ Serrano’s (22 years old) and his family’s cacao crops are surrounded by a wide variety of fruit trees: guanabanas, tangerines, mangos, oranges, soursops, papayas, lemons, and more. This type of farming is known as an “agroforestry system”, in which cacao trees grow next to others which provide shade and even yield crops. This brings benefits such as healthier crops, and even a diversification of food and income in the families who work on them.

This is one of the ways Johny and his family take care of their cacao trees… and of the environment. Other things they do are irrigation systems to face the rising temperatures, and they are betting on organic cacao, one that doesn’t use fertilizers and artificial pesticides. “Obviously, the tree doesn’t produce as much, but the quality of the cacao is far better than when you use chemical composts”.

By doing this, not only the cacao plantation becomes a sustainable and environmentally-responsible enterprise, but also the new business Johny has, in which takes tourists to see how cacao is grown and transformed: “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra) tourist route, which was born in the middle of the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” initiative and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project, developed by ICCO Cooperation with IFAD’s financial and technical support.
