Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: Fruit from a guava tree in “La Fortuna” estate, San Rafael, Magdalena department.

Besides growing cacao, Johny Serrano (22 years old) and his family also possess a wide variety of fruits growing in their land: guanabanas, tangerines, mangos, oranges, soursops, papayas, lemons, and more.

After completing the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” initiative (Hosts for Peace), part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project (developed by ICCO Cooperation in partnership with IFAD), Johny feels there’s huge potential both in cacao and other local flavors. “We have so many fruits, tubers, vegetables we should be taking advantage of," says the young entrepreneur. “Sometimes, for lack of innovation or knowledge, we don’t do it. But we do have great food: during the course I tasted dishes never in my life I would have guessed you could prepare out of sweet potato, or out of malanga. You can make some excellent dishes to offer visitors, typical food from the region”.

Johny is the maker of “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra), a tourist route which shows how cacao is grown and farmed. This business has given new value to Johny and his family’s crops as a unique tourist spot in the region.
